Time Trumpet

Time Trumpet
After the enormous success of the Man to Man review I have decided to do another one!
This time I am reviewing a little known BBC/Armando Iannucci production called Time Trumpet. I have to say this was a little gem. I was fortunate to come across it via the “Additional Items to Explore” feature on Amazon. When I perused it and read the reviews I thought i’d go mental and buy it! Turns out it was a superb decision!
Time Trumpet is a spoof documentary based in 2039 looking back at the past. Each episode features a certain period in the past (mainly spanning 2005-2012). The show features doctored footage, actors who are supposedly celebrities in 2039 and “current” celebrities talking about the past, similar to the “I love the 70’s/80’s/90’s” programmes a while back. Contributors to the show include Richard Ayoade, Stuart Lee and Mark Watson (along with others). The premise of it is a satirical view of current times put into past tense. Because of the nature of the program it has given them license to have fun with some situations. Examples of this are that now Jamie Oliver has cloned himself so that he can produce human meat that tells you how to cook it whilst cooking, Charlotte Church drank so much that she vomited herself inside-out and that famous time when Tesco went to war with Denmark.
This type of programme is not for everyone. Lovers of The Day Today and Brass Eye will definitely like this. It is similar in a lot of ways with its own stamp on it. The DVD itself has a couple of funny Easter eggs on it that aren’t too hard to find either. One of them is a superb “Home Shopping – Bacon” sketch.
Personally I would recommend giving it a watch. It is a high-brow, satirical comedy that won’t be for everyone but I would definitely give it a thumbs up.
There is a pretty cool website to go with the series. Find it at www.timetrumpet.co.uk.
