Another Thursday, Another Debate
The Big Three
Tonight it’s Sky’s turn to stage a debate. The topic is International Affairs. It starts at 8pm on Sky News and BBC News Channel. I for one will be watching, still not too sure who to vote for!
I am trying so hard to have an opinion on this years General Election. I know it’s hard but it’s so important that we all vote. Interest is waning in politics which is why the BNP and UKIP seem to be getting more votes when this isn’t really the case. Less people are voting and this is why these debate stunts are now in place. It ramps up interest, in the media and in turn, in the public domain.
It is so much easier to see or hear manifestos and policies from parties now. The internet should mean that interest in elections is higher because of the amount of information that is available. For whatever reason this is not the case. A real tragedy is that more people will be watching and voting for Britain’s Got Talent this summer than the General Election.
I have to say, I understand that it feels a bit heavy. There is a hell of a lot to think about, a hell of a lot to read potentially. The great thing about our democratic state is the fact that we all have the right to vote for who we want to move this country forward and it would be a real shame to just let that opportunity go. I have a little tip for anyone wanting to have an opinion and wanting to vote. Think of a few policy areas that you personally feel passionate about and research those. If you’re not aware of what these areas are they’re the following:
- Crime
- Defence
- Democracy
- Economy
- Education
- Environment
- Europe
- Foreign Policy
- Health
- Immigration
- Pensions/ Welfare
- Transport
I have done some searching around and I have found a good site for comparing the policies of the Parties. Pocket Politics is a really simple site that amongst other things allows the user to compare up to 6 Parties on their policies. This way you can scan through all of the policies from the Parties and determine which ones you agree with the most. I have found this very useful in simplifying what i’m looking for.
